Brandon Hosts Curling for Manitoba 55+ Games

More than 95 senior curlers made their way to the Brandon Curling Club on March 5, 6, and 7 to compete in the Manitoba 55+ Games. The Games, typically a summer event held in June, haven’t always offered Curling due to the difficulty finding ice, so Brandon’s host committee decided to split it off and host in March. As this was a qualifying year for the National 55+ Games in Quebec, the team thought it was important to offer the opportunity to compete to Manitoba’s curling community. Both traditional four person rinks competed, as well as 2-person stick curling, an adaptive version of the sport that allows those with more limited mobility to participate. The event was well received and enjoyed by attendees and organizers alike. Keep an eye out on social media for updates on the June games, taking place in Brandon from June 18-20, 2024 at various sport and community venues across the city.

Brandon First News

Brandon First at Sports Event Congress 2024!

Every year Brandon First attends Sport Tourism Canada’s Sports Events Congress and Sports Event Exchange, a three day conference dedicated to sport tourism. This conference moves around the country and as it was in Winnipeg this year, Brandon First partnered with Tourism Winnipeg and Travel Manitoba to sponsor the social evenings – a voucher for conference attendees to purchase concessions at the Jets game and a Social Evening at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights that included multiple food stations, a signature cocktail Brandon Berry Mojito, and dancing to a live band. As sponsors of the second day plenary luncheon, we got to show our specially created Brandon sports hosting video (those of you going to the State of the City Chamber luncheon are in for a treat!) and speak to the delegates about why Brandon is a great next host city for their Westerns or Nationals. We also partnered with the Keystone Centre to have a booth in vendor alley, which we combined with our partners at Tourism Winnipeg and Travel Manitoba to create a Team Manitoba Superbooth. The conference also features two days of the Sports Event Exchange, a “speed dating” session between organizations like Brandon First and National Sport Organizations (NSOs). Brandon First met with 15 NSOs for 8 minute speed sessions to discuss what events Brandon can host next. We were also able to attend panels on everything from Indigenous sport and inclusion to sustainable event practices. It was a wonderful week that we were proud to be such a big part of!
